We get this question a LOT. Unfortunately there is not a simple answer.
It Depends is the most honest answer we can give.
It depends on a ton of variables including:
- What’s your risk tolerance?
- How many reallocations have you done this month?
- How often you want to reallocate?
- How closely you watch the market?
- What time frame are we talking about?
- Are you willing to lock in losses?
- How close are you to retirement?
- Are you Buy & Hold, Swing, or Momentum trader?
- Do you trade on market analysis, current events, or gossip? …
What seems like a simple question on its face is impossible for us to answer on an individual basis for each member.
It's important to remember that first and foremost our site is an educational site, not a financial advisor service.
If you ask those simple questions to a financial planner, they will do a deep dive into your personal circumstances and risk tolerance before even entertaining an answer; and you’ll pay a lot for it… But, it will probably be worth it!
Anyone who gives you an answer to that question without doing a comprehensive look at your circumstances is either guessing, sharing "conventional wisdom," or telling you what you want to hear. Beware!
The bottom line is, your TSP account is your responsibility. Mostly because no one else can actively manage it but you. It's set up that way. We can educate and coach you but you need to do the work, know your left / right limits and have a plan...
That may sound like "tough love," but it's the right answer.
If you have specific questions or requests for advice that involve your personal situation, risk tolerance, life circumstances, etc., then unfortunately our support staff won't be able to assist. However, for a nominal fee, we do offer limited access to coaching for members and non members. You can email us at firstname.lastname@example.org for more info.
